Shine On Circle, Fall 2019

  • Fridays, Oct 4 through Nov 22, 10am - 12pm

  • Eight Sessions

  • Palo Alto

There are few experiences more powerful than a close circle of like-minded peers facing the journey of life together.  We work in a circle format because this form generates connections to ourselves and others that encourage creativity and courage.  Together we'll engage in exercises and activities designed to lead toward purpose-driven action.  Unlike typical goal setting, our aim is to share a set of tools that will support you in manifesting what matters most to you in all aspects of your life.  We hope that what we share will get you into action, will deepen your sense of meaning, and help you feel more integrated -- and less like a push-pull between different areas in your life.

Together we will explore our dreams, discover our daring edge, and create meaningful connections that will ignite our courage.  Shine On Collaborative has designed tools that will help you play, improvise, innovate, and explore.  In the course of the eight sessions, each circle member will design and step into their own personal dare.  We will cheer each other on and learn together what it means to craft a life that is connected, creative and courageous.

This circle will be facilitated by Jill Johnson, Leadership and Personal Development Coach.

Circling 50. Just a number, right? But it’s also when new changes are happening to your body, your priorities, your life. And no one is really talking about, let alone bringing humor to the bumps along the way. In this 50’s circle, you’ll get to bond with other women going through a similar time in life, dream and take chances, acknowledge your gifts and strengths, and learn tools that you can use the rest of your life. You will feel supported by other women who want to connect, as you explore and dare.

Investment: $395

Duke University Technology Scholars Peer Mentoring Workshop

Kirsten will present the "Power of Peer Mentoring" to the Duke Technology Scholars (DTECH).  While the importance of mentoring is widely known, studies suggest that women find it more challenging to develop mentoring relationships than men do. Companies tackle this problem through formal mentoring programs, but often informal mentoring relationships are most impactful.  This workshop will illustrate why deeper relationships contribute to increased confidence and career success.  Equipped with an understanding of the value in peer mentoring, participants will learn and practice how to better create meaningful connections.

The Duke Technology Scholars Program is a comprehensive effort to inspire a more diverse group of Duke undergraduates to choose careers in computer science and electrical & computer engineering.

Shine On Meetup: Anita Diamant

Come join us for the Palo Alto JCC’s Evening with Anita Diamant, New York Times bestselling author of The Red Tent and The Boston Girl. Ms. Diamant’s novels beautifully portray the significance of community and friendship among women, through times of both triumph and despair. In The Red Tent she wrote that “on the day that the intelligence and talents of women are fully honored and employed, the human community and the planet itself will benefit in ways we can only begin to imagine.” Shine On shares this vision, and it underlies so much of what we do.

This event promises to be memorable as we hear from the author who has brought us such resilient and inspiring heroines.

We will be gathering in the lobby beforehand, starting at 7pm, to say hello, and we will have some conversation starter cards to get you chatting with friends you came with or new friends from the Shine On community.

Purchase your ticket directly through the JCC, here.

Shine On Salon: Sheila Hamilton

Join us to celebrate  the launch of  Sheila Hamilton's new book, All the Things We Never Knew.

"All the Things We Never Knew is a boldly beautiful page-turner about loving and losing someone with mental illness.  With unblinking honesty and profound compassion, Sheila Hamilton brings us vividly into her confusion, sorror, and ultimate healing."  --Cheryl Strayed

Come meet Sheila Hamilton, 5 time Emmy Award winning journalist and host of "Speaking Freely," Portland's most popular radio talk show, as she discusses her new book, All the Things We Never Knew, A chronicle of her journey with mentally ill husband, David.  It is a compassionate portrait of how difficult it can be to come to terms with mental illness and psychological difficulty in our lives. Though this is undoubtedly a challenging topic, if you've ever listened to Shelia's radio show in Portland, you'll know that Sheila models a kind of gutsy compassion and generosity of spirit that guarantees a lively and hopeful discussion.

Great conversation, fresh learning, and real connection.  See you there.

Shoebox Project Party

When Sharon Wong attended our Playing Big Event on November 2nd, she was feeling called to organize a volunteer project to support women in need, and in just a few short weeks, she has launched the Palo Alto chapter of The Shoebox Project.  Through talking to friends, social media, and pure zest, Sharon has generated a local grassroots movement.  Shoebox Project parties are popping up all over town, local businesses are donating goods, local media is spreading the word.  We are thrilled that Sharon has put her commitment to helping women in need into action through her leap. And we can’t think of a better way to celebrate this blossoming of generosity and goodwill than by hosting a very casual, come as you are Shoebox Project Party of our own this month!
